Why Clean your roof?

The soft wash cleaning method we use for cleaning roofs, treats the organic micro-organisms growing in the roof tile surface. This layer of biofilm causes the surface of your tile to look grubby or dirty.

If left, roof moss can loosen and cause damage to roof tiles, cause severe and regular gutter blockages and ruin the look of your property. Removal of moss can prevent these issues but clearing it away alone can actually spread the moss spores across the roof, resulting in it growing back quickly over a larger area. It is recommended therefore, that the roof is also treated with a biocide to kill the spores & roots of moss, algae and mould.

How is it done?

Assessments are made at the quotation stage to select the correct roof moss treatment and to work out appropriate safety precautions. Where appropriate, a scaffold tower will be erected and moss removal with shaped extension tools, and on occasion a low pressure steamer, will begin. After all the moss is cleared and brushed down, then all gutters are cleared and temporary down pipes are fitted to minimise treatment entering the water course.

Finally, the area will be gently treated with a HSE approved professional cleaning product specially selected for your property. Before applying the treatment, all plant life will be pre (and then post) drenched with fresh water. Any particularly vulnerable plants will be covered and the area sectioned off to block pedestrian access to the working area. All pets must be safely kept indoors with windows shut.

What should I expect?

​

Results will vary slightly according to the type and age of tile along with how well it has been maintained over the years. Following the work, your roof will be clear of all moss. The treatment will have absorbed into the tile, protecting it from regrowth. Over the next few months you will start to see visible changes to the colour of the roof tiles and severity of the lichen spots as the layer of bio film is gradually worn down by the roof treatment, assisted by the elements. This gentle approach avoids damage that would otherwise be caused from high pressure alternative methods.

The treatment will prevent regrowth over the next few years. It is recommended that you re-treat every 2 to 3 years to keep your roof moss free. If done regularly, the treatment cost is a fraction of the initial work as there would be no need to remove moss.
